Senator Mike Lee introduced a new proposal to sell off public lands on June 25th - this time targeting 1.2 million acres of BLM land in the West.

We do not anticipate an impact to the Lake Tahoe Basin, however, it is important to continue to use your voices in opposition of the sale of public lands. Let’s preserve recreation, the economies recreation supports, and the places we love.

UPDATE: This post followed the blocking of the initial public land proposal on June 24, which was blocked by the Senate Parliamentarian. While this is a victory to celebrate, public lands are still under threat. Since then, a revision was released with a change in scope to exclude USFS land. BLM lands are still at risk, while not directly impacting our land and trails in the basin, it us important to continue to us your voice. Please see Iink in bio for the Outdoor Alliance action form. BREAKING NEWS! Thanks to thousands of voices (including yours), the proposal to sell off up to 3.3 million acres in public land has been removed from the Senate’s budget reconciliation bill, for the time being.

The Bill was blocked by the Senate Parliamentarian, however Senator Mike Lee is expected to revise the provision, potentially narrowing its scope. Public lands are expected to still be on the chopping block in this revision.

Over the past two weeks, hundreds of thousands of outdoor enthusiasts - alongside hunters, anglers, motorized users, and conservationists - spoke up to defend public lands.

The Senate budget reconciliation bill mandates the sale of between 2 million and 3 million acres, but over 250 million acres will be eligible for sale.

To provide some perspective on how this may impact trails in the Lake Tahoe Basin, TAMBA would like to share some high level maps illustrating proposed land for sale and associated trails partially or fully impacted if land is sold.

Proposed land sales within the basin are heavily concentrated to the South Lake Tahoe and West Shored regions, so we have shared those here for reference. Other impacts around the basin may apply.

The Senate budget reconciliation bill
Public lands sales are being proposed in eleven western states as part of a Senate budget reconciliation bill. These states include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The proposed sale could affect over 250 million acres of public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service, according to The Wilderness Society.

The Senate budget reconciliation refers to a federal legislative process used to pass bills related to spending, revenues, and the federal debt limit with a simple majority.

These are the places we escape, the places that make your soul sing. You set objectives, push your boundaries, climb, and literally conquer mountains in these spaces. Our laughter echos through these canyons, through theses tree tops. We forge lifelong friendships here and unforgettable memories. This is our backyard, our community, our home. This land is your land and this land is my land. Lands preserved by those who came before us and intended for preservation for generations to come.
